Monk's Belt Placemats Pattern by Sara Collazo Romay

Monk's Belt Placemats Pattern by Sara Collazo Romay

These placemats were developed in collaboration with Sara Collazo Romay for our Weaving 3 Online Course: Complex Cloth. Monk’s Belt is perhaps the most simple of complex cloth structures. It is this simplicity that makes it so fun to Design! Monk’s Belt is a form of overshot weaving using only two blocks to make grid forms. This pattern explores how changing the colour and proportion of these blocks and their background weft can create an eye-catching result.

We partnered with Sara for this project because of her reputation for fun and interesting colour combinations. We love what Sara has chosen for these placemats and can’t wait to see what you make with her pattern as inspiration. Sara encourages you to continue to explore and create your own design. Consider changing the treadling, color, or thread count on the weft.

This pattern requires a four shaft loom.Ā

You’ll need a reed at least 17ā€ wide that isĀ  ideally 8 or 12 dents per inch.

Finished Dimensions: 4 placemats, 15" x 20ā€
